PHRM 825: HD, PD, and other RRT Flashcards
What is ultrafiltrate?
Waste products removed during continuous renal replacement therapy
What is an AV fistula
Surgically created anastamosis between an artery and a vein, usually located in the forearm between the radial artery and cephalic vein used for HD access
What is an AV graft?
An alternate to a fistula, the graft is created by surgically connecting an artery and vein with a polytetrafluoroethylene tube
Indications for RRT
A - Acid/Base balance E - Electrolyte balance I - Intoxication/Poisoning O - Overload U - Uremia
What substances are NOT removed during hemodialysis?
- High Vd
- High lipophilicity
- Large molecular weight
- Highly protein bound
What is the goal for Kt/V?
1.4
What are complications of hemodialysis?
- Hypotension
- Pruritus
- Muscle cramps
How does PD work?
Uses patients peritoneal membrane as dialysis membrane
Who is PD reserved for?
Pediatrics or ESRD patients already receiving PD
When is PD used for acute renal failure (ARF)?
Rarely except for in children
How does PD compare to HD?
Not as effective but is a continuous therapy
What is CAPD
Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
What is CCPD
Continuous Cyclic Peritoneal Dialysis
What is NIPD
Nocturnal Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis
What is TPD
Tidal Peritoneal Dialysis (most expensive kind)
