Photosynthesis Flashcards
Give some examples of why living organisms need energy
active transport, anabolic reactions (building polymers), movement
What are anabolic reactions?
small molecules are assembled into large ones - energy is required
What are catabolic reactions?
large molecules are broken down into small ones - energy is released
Is energy used or released when break bonds?
energy is used to break bonds
Is energy used or released when forming bonds?
energy is released when bonds are made
Describe the bonds/energy in small inorganic molecules
joined by strong bonds and so need a lot of energy to break them apart and they release a lot of energy when they are made
Describe the bonds/energy in organic molecules
organic molecules contain more but weaker bonds - this means they require less energy to be made and less energy to be broken
Describe the importance of bonds in respiration
When breaking down glucose an oxygen, very little energy is released. The excess energy released is used to synthesise ATP.
Describe the importance of bonds in photosynthesis
When breaking bonds in water and carbon dioxide, it requires a lot of energy. Whereas making bonds in glucose and oxygen, not very much energy is released.
