Registered veterinary surgeon, registered pharmacist and registered suitably qualified person (SQP)

What is a POM-V classification?
Prescription-only medication by the veterinary surgeon
What is a POM-VPS classification?
Prescription-only medication - veterinary surgeon, pharmacist or SQP
What is a NFA-VPS classification?
Non-food animal - vet, pharmacist or SQP dispense (but no prescription required)
What is a AVM-GSL classification?
No restriction on supply, can be supplied by any retailer but drugs must be labelled to emphasise that they are medicines
What is a schedule 1 drug?
Addictive drugs e.g. LSD, cannabis - vets have no authority to possess or prescribe
What is a schedule 2 drug?
Opiate analgesics e.g. morphine/methadone/ketamine - stringent rules apply
What is a schedule 3 drug?
Barbiturates e.g. tramadol - keep locked in a secure cabinet
What is a schedule 4 drug?
Benzodiazepines e.g. valium, diazepam - exempt from control when used in a vet practice (no restrictions)
What is a schedule 5 drug?
Low-strength preparations of paracetamol/codeine/morphine - no restrictions
Where should schedule 2 drugs be kept?
In a locked cupboard with specific key-holders, vets must sign controlled drugs register when prescribed
Where should schedule 3 drugs be kept?
Not obligated to store in locked cupboard but it is good practice to record buprenorphine use
How long must entries in the controlled drug register be kept?
2 years
