What is reverse barrier nursing?
Nursing poor immune status/very old/young/unvaccinated patients before others
How far away from other patients should an isolation facility be?
At least 5 metres
What are the important features of an isolation ward?
Dedicated nurse (if possible) PPE available on entrance Disposable equipment/each patient has own equipment Bedding wash bags Minimise owner visits
How do multi-resistant infections occur?
Immunosuppression
Surgical/medical conditions
Long hospital stays
Invasive devices/implants
When should presence of a multi-resistant infection be considered?
If patient is not responding to antibiotics or has significant risk factors for infection
What is MRSA?
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus
Results in non-healing wounds
Can lead to sepsis if untreated
