How do reptiles control their temperature?
Ectothermic - control environmentally
How to provide adequate heat
- light bulbs, ceramic lamps, tube heaters, heat mats
- need thermometer
- need temperature gradient
- avoid hot rocks (will burn reptiles)
What type of UV light do reptiles need to synthesise vitamin D?
UVB via UVB tube - need to be able to get within 15cm of it
Which substrates are appropriate for reptiles?
Sand/gravel, wood chip, newspaper/towels, peat/soils
How should humidity be provided to reptiles?
In a gradient, using a sprayer, drip system, bath or humidity hut (depending on species)
Why should you not handle reptiles by the tail?
Many have tail-drop defence mechanism
Feeding insectivorous lizards
- Crickets, mealworms, waxworms
- Calcium/vit D supplementation
- Some will also eat leafy greens/flowers
Feeding herbivorous lizards
- Leafy green, squash/parsnip, green beans, soft fruits
- Calcium/vit D supplement
How to sex bearded dragons?
Males develop femoral pores along inner thighs and have a wider tale base than females
Should bearded dragons be kept in multiples?
No - will fight
Should snakes be kept in multiples?
No
What is POTZ?
Preferred optimal temperature zone - range where normal physiological processes can be carried out
How do snakes have young?
Most are oviparous (egg-laying) but a few species are viviparous (develop inside mother) - usually boas
