50ml/kg/day
What are the essential fatty acids?
Linoleic acid, linolenic acid (can be synthesised from linoleic acid), arachidonic acid (in cats)

B + C
What are signs of vitamin B deficiency?
CNS signs, anaemia, weight loss
What are the fat-soluble vitamins?
A D E K
What are the important minerals?
Calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chloride
How many essential amino acids are there?
10 (+ taurine for cats)
Why do cats need taurine?
They cannot convert methionine/cysteine into taurine -inadequate levels can cause blindness and heart problems
Any special requirements for kittens/puppies?
3-4 meals per day until 4-6 months old; feed reduced calcium diet to large-breed puppies
Any special requirements for adults?
1-2 meals per day; do not add nutrients to balanced diet
Any special requirements for pregnancies?
Energy dense; 1.5x RER; don’t increase feeding until 5th week of pregnancy
Any special requirements for lactating animals?
Energy dense; 2-3x RER; reduce feeds at 4 weeks of lactating
Any special requirements for geriatrics?
Avoid sudden dietary changes; give high quality protein; therapeutic diet if required to manage/treat disease
What are the advantages of a raw-fed diet?
Shiny coat, weight management
What are the disadvantages of a raw-fed diet?
GI inflammation and infections
