pharmacology Flashcards
anti-cholesterol drugs
- statin
- fibres
- PCSK 9 inhibitors
example of statin
simvastatin
how to statins work
block HMG CoA reductase
what are statins used for (4)
- hypercholesterolaemia
- diabetes
- angina / MI
- CVA (stroke) / TIA (transent ischaemic attack)
statin side effects (2)
- myopathy (muscle fibres dont work)
- rhabdomyolysis (renal failure)
example of fibrate
bezafibrate
what are fibrates used for (2)
- hypertriglycerideamia
- low HDL cholesterol
example of PCSK 9 inhibitor
- alirocumab
- evolocumab
what are PCSK9 inhibitor used for (1)
familial hypercholesterolaemia
how does PCSK 9 inhibitor work
inhibits the binding go PCSK 9 to LDLR therefore increasing LDLR allowing LDL to be cleared
therefore lowers LDL levels
anti-hypertensive drugs (4)
- thiazide diuretics
- beta blockers
- vasodilators
- mineralocorticoids antagonist
what are the 4 vasodilators
- calcium antagonist
- alpha blocker s
- ACE inhibits
- angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB)
how do diuretics works
block Na reabsorption in the kidneys
what are the 2 types of diuretics
- thiazide
- loop
example of thiazide diuretics
bendofluazide
what is thiazide diuretic used in (1)
hypertension
what is an example of loop diuretic
furosemide
what is loop diuretic used in
heart failure
what are the 5 side effects of diuretics
- hypokalaemia (tired)
- arrhythmias
- hyperglycaemia
- increased uric acid (gout)
- impotence
how to beta blockers work
block B1 and B2 adrenoreceptors
what are the 2 types of beta blocker
selective and non selective
example of selective beta blockers
- atenolol
- bisoprpolol
what are the 5 things selective B1 blockers are used for
- angina
- acute coronary syndrome
- MI
- hypertension
- heart failure
example of non selective beta blocker
propranolol
