Pharmacology Flashcards
Which three types of drugs are given following an inflammatory disease?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (SAIDs). Disease modifying anti-inflammatory drugs (DMARDs).
How do NSAIDs work?
They work by inhibiting Cyclo-oxygenase-2, thus inhibiting prostaglandin production - stimulate inflammation.
What are the 2 types of NSAIDs?
Non-selective inhibitors e.g. aspirin, ibruprofen, indomethacin. COX-2 selective inhibitors e.g. celecoxib, etoricoxib, rofecoxib, meloxicam.
Name 2 non-selective inhibitors.
Aspirin. Ibruprofen. Indomethacin.
Name 2 COX-2 selective inhibitors.
Celecoxib. Etoricoxib. Rofecoxib. Meloxicam.
Name 2 anti-inflammatory steroids.
Hydrocortisone. Glucocorticoids. Prednisolone.
What do Disease modifying anti-inflammatory drugs (DMARDs) do?
They suppress an overactive immune system to inhibit damaging process. Often prescribed together as combination therapy.
What are the 3 types of Disease modifying anti-inflammatory drugs (DMARDs)?
DMARDs - taken orally, broad immuno-suppressants. Biologics/biosimilars - self-injection. Targeted DMARDs - target specific immune system signalling molecules.
Name a traditional DMARD.
Methotrexate.
What is Methotrexate?
Folate antagonist - anti-metabolite in cancer chemotherapy.
Give 2 examples of DMARD biologics anti-TNF antibodies.
Infliximab. Adalimumab.
Name a DMARD biologic that blocks TNF to reduce inflammation.
Etanercept.
Name a targeted DMARD.
Barcitinib. Apremilast.
