What is coeliac disease?
A
Chronic mediated disorder where the small intestine becomes inflamed and unable to absorb nutrients - triggered by ingesting gluten.

State 3 symptoms of coeliac disease.
A
Malabsorption. Diarrhoea. Abdominal pains. Anaemia. Osteoporosis.

How is coeliac disease diagnosed?
A
Duodenal biopsy - increased epithelial lymphocytes, crypt hyperplasia (enlargement of organ due to increased reproduction rate of cells), villous atrophy (intestinal villi erode away).

State 3 differentials of coeliac disease.
A
Viral/bacterial infection. Crohn’s disease. Small bowel bacterial growth. Irritable bowel syndrome. Microscopic colitis. Malabsorption.
