Q

What is dose based on?

A

• Biochemical and pharmacologic activity: ADME
• Physical and chemical properties: Hydrophilic, lipophilic
• Dosage form used: Tablet, capsule, transdermal patch, etc
• Route of Administration: PO, IV, etc
• Patient factors: Age, weight, body surface, liver and kidney function, etc

7
Q

How do you calculate a dose?

A

To calculate a dose, you should multiple the dosage rate by the animal’s weight in kilograms (or pounds). The dose then is divided by the amount (concentration) of the drug in the pharmaceutic form (e.g., tablet or solution) to determine the actual amount of the pharmaceutic form to be administered.

11
Q

Why do we use kg instead of lbs?

A

Because most scales used to weigh animals provide the weight in pounds, a conversion must be made from pounds to kilograms.

Q

How do I determine the quantity of a drug to give a patient if I know how many total miligrams it needs in a dose?

A

If the order is to just “give a dog 300 mg of amoxicillin”, then the ordered amount is simply divided by the concentration of the drug to determine the amount to be administered

13
Q

How do you calculate the number of doses needed/ the dispensing quantity?

A

Usually, you need to calculate the size of a dose, the number of doses, or the total quantity of drug to be dispensed.

Q

What is the dose based on BSA? What is it correlated to?

A

The dose of most drugs used to treat neoplasm is calculated according to the body surface area (BSA) of the patient.
BSA is correlated with the weight of the animal (see table below) to convert an animal weight to BSA m2
