pH and Buffers Flashcards
What is autoionization?
When molecules of the same substance react with each other.
What is H3O+
Hydronium ion - Gives rise to acids
What is OH-
Hydroxide ion
What are the characteristics of bases?
Bitter tasting
Slippery feeling
Conduct Electricity
- Have a pH above 7
What are the characteristics of acids?
Taste sour
Conduct electricity
Have a pH below 7
What is a neutralization reaction?
When a strong acid and a strong base react together to form a salt and water
Strong acids/bases _______ ionize when dissolved in water (COMPLETELY/PARTIALLY)
completely
weak acids/bases _______ionize in water (COMPLETELY/PARTIALLY)
partially
Acids ________ H+ ions in a neutralization reaction (GIVE AWAY/TAKE)
Give away
Bases _______ H+ ions in a neutralization reaction (GIVE AWAY/TAKE)
Take
What are buffers?
Chemicals that resist pH change.
What is homeostasis?
refers to the body’s attempt at maintaining a stable internal environment
How is pH maintained in your body?
by the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer
What happens when H+ enters the bloodstream?
HCO3+ reacts with the H+ to neutralize it.
What happens when a base enters the bloodstream?
the base reacts with the existing H+ in the body then H2CO3 can ionize to become H+ (replacing what was lost)
