Nervous System - Textbook Flashcards
The nervous system is divided into which two systems?
Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System
What makes up the Central Nervous System?
The nerves of the brain and the spinal cord
It acts as a coordinating center for incoming and outgoing information.
What is the peripheral nervous system responsible for?
It carries information between the organs of the body and the central nervous system.
What two systems can the peripheral nervous system be divided into?
The somatic nerves and the autonomic nerves.
What do somatic nerves control?
Skeletal muscle, bones, and skin.
Sensory somatic nerves relay information about the environment to the central nervous system
Motor somatic nerves initiate an appropriate response
What do autonomic nerves control?
they are special motor nerves that are designed to control the internal organs of the body.
What two systems can the autonomic nervous system be divided into?
The Sympathetic and Parasympathetic systems.
What 2 types of cells can be found in the nervous system?
Glial Cells
Neurons
What are Glial Cells?
non-conducting cells that are important for the structural support and metabolism of the nerve cells.
What are Neurons?
The functional unit of the nervous system
They conduct nerve impulses.
