Peter Jones L2 Flashcards
Prototype theory
New items are compared to prototypes and then catagorised
Exemplar theory
We remember all instances of a category - comparing new stimuli to that set
Pigeons category learning across images
Novel images of trees, categories of water, people (even specific people), tropical fish, painting styles and discriminated across categories
Size of learning sets B
Bhatt, 1988 - larger training sets lead to poorer performance learning training items but better performance on test items
Categorisation determined by features H+L
Huber and Lenz, 1993 - stimuli dimensions in faces
How do animals classify?
They appear to recognise based on features rather than by learning
Alex the parrot
Could respond verbally to same/different questions
Why do pigeons comparably struggle with the same/different judgements?
Can perceive sameness but lack salience (Wilson 1985), and prefer individual stimuli, Training helps
