A

The primitive part of our make-up works on the basis of maximising pleasure.
Made up of biological urges for food, shelter and sexual gratification
It is irrational, impulsive and unconscious.

What is EGO?

A
  • It is the regulator and sets the standard for behaviour.
  • Directs energies of the ID, taking reality into account and making sure that behaviour is practical and appropriate.
  • It is in conscious control of behaviour
  • According to Freud, the EGO is the part of you that stops you from punching someone when they irritate you, or from leaving class to go to the canteen whenever you feel hungry

What is SUPEREGO

A
  • Come into play around 4-5 years of age
  • Is the voice of conscience that focuses on how we ought to behave.
  • Is the perfectionist part of us, leading to positive feelings of pride or negative feelings of guilt.
  • It’s demands are often directly opposed to those of the id.
