Why is speech used?
It’s to transmit words that convey meaning
Situations that involve speech are?
Meet and greet
Expression of thoughts, feelings and/or ideas
Sharing knowledge
What is effective communication?
Where listener receives spoken message, interprets the message.
Where can communication go wrong with speakers?
Speakers can: talk too low or quickly to be heard properly, not give enough details to interpret message
Where can communication go wrong with listeners?
Listeners can:
- be pre-occupied with own thoughts
- thinking of their own reply
- opinion of speaker influencing their level of engagement
- lacking understanding of message being presented and failing to seek clarification
What are a couple of barriers to listening?
Background distractions: tv, music, video games
Electronic meetings: distracted by devices; checking email, online shopping
What does an active listener consist of?
Engaged in convo + genuinely interested in message
Trying to understand message before replying - asks for clarification
- gives ongoing feedback
- alternating roles between speaker and listener
What does an effective listener need to do?
Pay attention
Able to receive, under and respond to message being sent
Let speaker know they are listening by non-verbal cues
What is assertive communication?
Involves honest expression of feeling and opinions in a way that doesn’t infringe on other people’s rights, feelings and beliefs
What are the three steps of assertive communication?
- To express that you are trying to understand the other person’s position
- State the problem, outline your issues and what needs to change
- Make a specific statement about what you want to change
