Cerebral Cortex & It's Lobes Flashcards
Cerebral Cortex is what and is conjoined by what?
Located over and around most of the other brain structures.
Made of two hemispheres
Conjoined by the CORPUS CALLOSUM
Left Hemisphere
Mainly controls the movements and processing sensations of the right side of the body.
Language based tasks - speaking, writing, reading
Analytical thinking
Sequential processing
Logical reasoning
Right Hemisphere
Controls the left side of the body and processes sensations from there.
In control of non-verbal functions.
Visual-spatial tasks - reading maps, doing jigsaw puzzles
Appreciation of art and music
Detection and expression of emotion
Recognition of faces and patterns
What are the lobes of the Cerebral Cortex?
Frontal Lobe
Temporal Lobe
Parietal Lobe
Occipital Lobe
Frontal Lobe Location
The front of each hemisphere, in front of the parietal lobe & above the temporal lobe
Frontal Lobe Major Functions
- Control of voluntary movement
- Abstract thinking
- Regulation of emotional behaviour
- Personality
Temporal Lobe Location
Each side of the brain under the cerebral hemispheres
Temporal Lobe Major Functions
- Receive and process auditory information, verbal + non-verbal
Parietal Lobe Location
Above the occipital lobe & behind the frontal lobe
Parietal Lobe Major Functions
- Integrates sensory information relating to touch, temperature, position in space and muscle movement
Occipital Lobe Location
At the back of the brain above the cerebellum
Occipital Lobe Major Functions
Receive and process visual information such as colour, shape and motion
