Q

Electro-Encephalograph (EEG)

A
  • Uses electrodes attached to the head of the patient.
  • Detects and amplifies brain activity.
  • Level of activity is recorded as a series of peaks and troughs.
  • Different patterns reflect different states of brain activity.

Q
Computed Tomography (CT)
Computed Axial Tomography (CAT)
A
  • Utilise a machine to take a type of X-ray.
  • Images are taken as a series of ‘slices’ of the brain.
  • Sliced images are able to highlight irregularities in the brain’s structures.

Q

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

A
  • Similar to CAT scans but, this scan a magnetic field, frequency pulses to create a 3D image. Provides superior images compared to CAT scans.
  • Provides doctors with sleeves of images to show irregularities, e.g. tumours, cancer.

Q

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

A
  • Measures brain activity.
  • Uses glucose consumption in the brain, includes a radioactive tracer to see how much glucose is being consumed at a given time.
  • Different colours show levels of activity.
Red = high activity levels, dark blue = low activity
