Brain Imaging Flashcards
1
Q
Electro-Encephalograph (EEG)
A
- Uses electrodes attached to the head of the patient.
- Detects and amplifies brain activity.
- Level of activity is recorded as a series of peaks and troughs.
- Different patterns reflect different states of brain activity.
1
Q
Computed Tomography (CT) Computed Axial Tomography (CAT)
A
- Utilise a machine to take a type of X-ray.
- Images are taken as a series of ‘slices’ of the brain.
- Sliced images are able to highlight irregularities in the brain’s structures.
2
Q
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
A
- Similar to CAT scans but, this scan a magnetic field, frequency pulses to create a 3D image. Provides superior images compared to CAT scans.
- Provides doctors with sleeves of images to show irregularities, e.g. tumours, cancer.
3
Q
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
A
- Measures brain activity.
- Uses glucose consumption in the brain, includes a radioactive tracer to see how much glucose is being consumed at a given time.
- Different colours show levels of activity.
Red = high activity levels, dark blue = low activity
