Person of Christ Flashcards
What are some of the names of Christ given in Scripture?
Jesus (the Lord Saves) Matthew 1:21- “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Messiah (the anointed one) John 1:41-“The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him We have found the Messiah! And he brought him to Jesus.
Lord (master, leader) Acts 10:36-Peter says to Cornelius: You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all!
Alpha and Omega and Almighty-Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and Omega says the Lord God who is and who was and who is yet to come, the Almighty!
Bread of Life: John 6:35-“Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never go thirsty.”
Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? Why?
Scripture clearly states it: Lord (master, leader) Acts 10:36-Peter says to Cornelius: You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all!
OT Prophecy confirms it: Birth-Michah 5:2-“But you Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will be ruler over Israel whose origins are from ancient times.
and…
Death-Isaiah 53
Personal Experience
Is Christ eternal? (Does he have a beginning or end; was there a time when he was not?)
Christ is eternal:
Existed before creation: Genesis 1:1-“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” and Rev. 1:8 (Alpha and Omega)
Word was God and was with God: John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Firstborn: Colossians 1:15-“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all Creation.”
Give examples of the person of Christ in the OT
Let us make man in our image: Genesis 1:26- “Then God said, let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…”
He was born and called Wonderful Counselor Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting, Father, Prince of Peace.”
Pierced for our transgressions: Isaiah 53 has human/personal characteristics all through it-v. 5 “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.”
What biblical evidence is there that Christ was conscious of his divinity?
At baptism: “This is my beloved Son” -Matthew 3:17
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman “I am the Messiah-John 4:25-26- “The woman said I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, I, the one speaking to you, -I am he.”
In my Father’s house: John 14:1-4-“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. My father’s house has many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you may also be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
What is the Scriptural foundation for believing that Christ had both a divine nature and human nature?
Hypostatic Union-fully God and fully man
Word became flesh: John 1:14: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
“I and the Father are one”: John 10:30
Jesus’ baptism-he was there in the flesh, and God the Father verifies his divine nature as His Son: Matthew 3:17-“And a voice from Heaven said this is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman “I am the Messiah-John 4:25-26- “The woman said I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, I, the one speaking to you, -I am he.”
John 8:58: Before Abraham was born, I am
Why are both natures essential to the person of Christ?
Foundational to the Gospel…perfect sacrifice and priestly office…
He is our high priest who can empathize with our temptation in every way:
Hebrews 4:14-15-“ Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin.”
Which made him the perfect sacrifice to establish an eternal Covenant established with us and God: Hebrews 9:11-12: “But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the most Holy Place once and for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”
