Intraperitoneal definition
organs that are completely covered by peritoneum and have a mesentery
Abdominal and Pelvic, respectively
Extraperitoneal definition
organs that have no mesentery or lost it during development
Retroperitoneal (Primarily and Secondarily): organs covered by peritoneum on one side
Intraperitoneal/subperitoneal:
Abdominal peritoneal cavity (intraperitoneal organs)
stomach
spleen
small intestines (jejunum, ileum, some duodenum)
liver
large intestines (transverse and sigmoid)
Gallbladder
Cecum with vermiform appendix
Pelvic peritoneal cavity (intraperitoneal organs)
OUT
Ovaries, uterus, uterine tubes
Extraperitoneal
Primarily retroperitoneal organs
kidneys
suprarenal gland
uterine cervix
Aorta + IVC
gonads
adrenals
Extraperitoneal
Secondarily retroperitoneal
Duodenum (Descending, horizontal, ascending)
Ascending and descending colon
rectum (upper 1/3)
pancreas
Extraperitoneal

THE mesentery
attaches small intestine to posterior body wall
jejunum and ileum
derivatives of the foregut
esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, upper duodenum
derivatives of the midgut
lower duogenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, appendix ascending colon, proximal two thirds of the transverse colon
derivatives of the hindgut
distal third of the transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, and upper anal canal
