peripheral nervous system Flashcards
What is the voluntary periferal nervous system called?
The Somatic NS
What is the INvoluntary periferal nervous system called?
The Autonomic nervous system
What are the three divisions of the Autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
*Enteric nervous system
Another term for sensory fiber?
Afferent
Another term for motor fiber?
Efferent
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31
What are the ganglia from the sensory periferal nervous system called?
Sensory ganglia.
What are the two types of autonomic ganglia called and where are they situated?
- Sympathetic ganglia = dorsal root ganglion - close to the spinal cord
- Parasympathetic ganglia - near or even within the viscera.
What are the ganglia called of the motoric periferal nervous system?
There is no ganglia. The nerve cellbodies are within the spinal cord.
There are two types of plexuses in the peripheral nervoussystem. Which are they?
- Spinal nerve plexuses formed by intersecting subdivisions of the anterior rami of the spinal nerves.
- Autonomic plexuses found in the thorax, abdomen and pelvis. -Responsible for regulating the activity of visceral organs.
Which are the spinal nerve plexuses?
C1-C4 - cervical plexus
C5-T1 - brachial plexus
T12-L4 - Lumbar plexus
L4-S4 - Sacral plexus
What nerves come from the cervical plexus?
- Lesser occipital nerve
- Great auricular nerve
- Transverse cervical nerve
- Supraclavicular nerves
- PHRENIC nerve
- Ansa cervicalis
- Other e g to the rhomboids and serratus anterior.
What nerves come from the Brachial plexus?
- Axillary nerve
- Musculocutaneous merve
- Radial merve
- Median nerve
- Ulnar nerve
- others!!! ex long thoracic and suprascapular mm
Depending on what structures the periferal nerve innervate, it has information from the four modalities:
- Special
- General
- Somatic
- Visceral
What is special modality
innervating special senses (e.g. eye) and is found only in afferent fibers
