Live art presentation by artists. Way of bring the formal and conceptual ideas about the making of art to life. Related to theatre, but doesn’t usually have a storyline or dramatic effect. Has no rules and is experimental.
Subject matter
Related to conceptual art. Ideas demonstrated or executed. Nature of performance can be esoteric, shamanistic, instructive provocative or entertaining
Who presets the art piece
It can be just the artist, but artist can work in collaboration. The performer is usually the artist, not a chatter like in theatre.
What types of performance artworks are there
Painting, sculpture, dialogue, poetry, dance, lighting, music and visuals
Where can performance art be performed
Anywhere: it depends on the message the artist is trying to convey. This has led to the democratisation of art
What does the democratisation of art
It refers to something that is accessible to everyone
Are performance art pieces sold
No, but the artist can sell film rights or admission tickets
How long is performance art
It can last days, hours or even minutes. It can be performed multiple times or only once
What role does the viewer play
They can be involved in the art as part of it or simply moving through it.
How is performance art documented
Photographically or on video.
