Artist portrays own emotional reaction in highly individual style. Free distortion of colour and space take place. It often took place in times of tension when the individual wants to show his own feelings

How did Van Gogh influence expressionism
He was the typical expressionist artist who worked according to his subjective feelings. His passionate passionate distortion, strong use of colour, linear brushstroke and compassion for his fellow man influenced the german expressionists.
How did non-western cultures influence expressionism
They viewed this art as excluding superficiality of western art. African masks were also an influence because the expressionists felt that they were created in a pure society
How did the german character influence expressionism
Expressionism was strongly evident in the germanic countries because of inherent character for searching behind appearances. Past artists Dürer and Grüewaldt are examples of emotional expressionists and the german expressionists carried on the tradition. German history at that time was one of tension and division. The unstable political, social and economic climate before WWI was an excellent breeding ground for expressionism
