It was an important and radical art revolution. Since the renaissance, artists worked perspectively, where the eye rules and the artwork is naturalistic. This idea was challenged by many artists since Impressionism. Eg. Emotional response, abstract paintings unrelated to the natural world, liberating colour from it descriptive use.
