Perception and Attribution Flashcards
Attribution
Explanation of someones behavior based on one’s perception
3 factors influencing perception
Perceiver
Target
Situation
Social identity theory
Our perception is affected by who we surround ourselves with.
4 Biases in perception
Primacy and recency effect- First (Primacy) or last (Recency) thing that is seen has a large impact on perception
Stereotypes- Grouping a group of people under a generalized statement
Implicit personality theory- Belief that certain traits are linked. Ex/ Fat= Lazy
Reliance on central traits- Certain traits have a big impact on perception
Why do stereotypes persist
A large amount of info that people have to go through, easier to group people.
Selective Perception- People look for traits that prove their stereotypes are true.
3 Attribution cues
Consistency- Does this happen often
Consensus- Did this happen to everyone
Distinctiveness- Does the behavior happen in different situations
Dispositional vs situational attribution
Dispotional (Internal factors)
Situational (External Factors)
3 biases in attribution
Actor observation bias- Using dispositional factors for others, but situational factors for others
Fundamental attribution error- Favouring dispositional explanations
Self-serving bias- Explanations are made to make yourself look better
