Penicillins Flashcards
What do penicillins do?
weaken the cell wall and cause excess water to enter and rupture bacteria
who NOT to give penicillin to
immunocompromised patients –> burst bacteria lets all its contents out
Principle adverse effect of penicillin
allergy
which bacteria is most likely to be resistant to penicillin
S aureus –> MRSA
G- vs G+
G- has 3 layers with thin cell wall that’s hard to get thru
G+ has 2 layers with thick cell wall that’s easy to get thru
Penicillinases
inactivate penicillin
produced by bacteria
Penicillin G
least toxic antibiotic
works for G+ and some G-
What to do if someone has mild response to penicillin vs severe response
mild: give cephalosporins
severe: don’t!
Penicillinase-resistant penicillin
nafcillin
oxacillin
dicloxacillin
broad spectrum penecillins
(side effects)
ampicillin
amoxicillin
*can cause rash or diarrhea
Extended spectrum penicillin
antipseudomonal penicillin: piperacillin
better against G- bacteria
beta-lactamase inhibitor
tazobactam
Most important combo drug
Zosyn = piperacillin and tazobactam
(extended spectrum penicillin and beta-lactamase inhibitor)
