basic principles of antimicrobials Flashcards
Spontaneous mutation v conjugation
spontaneous: random –> resistance to 1 drug
conjugation: 2 mocrobes switch DNA segments –> multi drug resistance
what types of antibiotics are most likely to cause resistance
broad spectrum
Superinfection
new infection that appears over the course of treatment for a primary infection
immediate, accelerated, delayed reactions to drug
w/ hour
1-72 hrs
multiple days later
Empiric therapy
broad spectrum antibiotic therapy used before causative organism is identified –> should be short term
When are prophylactic meds appropriate
surgery (staph from skin)
bacterial endocarditis (before dental procedures)
neutropenia and transplant
Monitoring antimicrobial therapy
if getting worse on antibiotics, its probably the wrong drug
