catharsis: liquidy stool NOW
normal bowel elimination habits
3x a day to 2x a week
Contraindications for laxatives
ab pain, nauseam cramps, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis
acute surgical abdomen
obstruction
habitual use
careful with pregnancy
surfactant laxatives
emollient
produce stool several days after treatment
Colace
Stimulant laxatives
bisacodyl
oral senna
often abused
prperly used for opioid induced constipation
docusate sodium/calcium
Osmotic laxatives
take at night –> 6 to 12 hours
risks = dehydration, renal failure, sodium retention
magnesium or sodium salts
polyethylene glycol
caster oil
fast effects
may cause anal leakage
glycerin suppository
fast effects
bowel cleansing products
sodium picosulfate
-Hypertonic with body fluid
-Causes dehydration and electrolyte imbalance (note: K is high)

polyethylene-glycol electolyte solution
osmotic laxative –> isosmotic with body fluids
good for renal patients
take lots of fluid
