pelvis and sacrum Flashcards
1
Q
Greater Pelvis
A
wings of ilium and the sacrum
-pelvis in men larger and denser
2
Q
lesser pelvis
A
- true part of the pelvis, tiny space where viscera (bladder, reproductive organs etc.) are located
- the pelvis is tilted
3
Q
sacrum
A
- 5 fused vertebrae that form 1 solid bone
- PROMONTARY OF SACRUM: most superior surface on the body of the first sacral vertebrae*
- coccyx located inferiorly to it
- superior articular facet posteriorly
- wings (ala) on each side of the base, helps to form sacroiliac joint
- lateral crest is the fusion of transverse processes, ligaments and muscles attach here
- sacral hiatus covered by thick connective tissue
- in males stick in more, more tilted backwards in women
4
Q
pelvic brim
A
5
Q
hip bone
A
contains : ischium, ilium, pubis, acetabulum, ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine) : bony projection of iliac bone, obturator foramen
6
Q
acetabulum
A
socket of the hipbone, where the head of the femur fits
7
Q
ilium
A
- superior, flattened, fan-shaped part of the hip bone
- ala of the ilium: spread of the fan
- body of the ilium forms the superior part of the acetabulum
8
Q
ischium
A
- lower and back part of the hip bone
- has a body and a ramus
9
Q
pubis
A
- located in front of the pelvic girdle
- pubic symphysis : a secondary cartilaginous joint between the left and right superior rami of the pubis of the hip bones
- has two projections : superiorly and inferiorly (ramus)
10
Q
obturator foramen
A
- large opening in the hip bone between the pubis and the ischium
- covered by membrane
- gives attachments to muscles, and lets nerves pass through
- circular in men, more oval shaped in women
11
Q
greater and lesser sciatic notch
A
- divided by ischial spine
- parts of ligaments will attach to form a hole on these notches
12
Q
auricular surface
A
- auricular because of resemblance to the ear
- articulates with the lateral border of the sacrum
- covered in highland cartilage
13
Q
subpubic angles/arch of male and female pelvis
A
-smaller angle in males than females
14
Q
spondylolithesis
A
vertebral column slips anteriorly
- body of L5 can protrude and falls off of S1
- nerve irritation, leads to extremely unstable joint
