Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and Infertility Vocabulary Flashcards
The buildup of fluid within the air sacs or alveoli within the lungs
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Irregular bands of tissue
Adhesions
A hormone, such as testosterone, that is responsible for male characteristics
Androgen
Lack of ovulation
Anovulation
Syndrome characterized by endometrial adhesions that typically occur as a result of scar formation after some type of uterine surgery
Asherman Syndrome
A common uterine anomaly in which the endometrium divides into two horns; also referred to as bicornis unicollis
Bicornuate Uterus
Inflammation of the cervix
Cervicitis
Fertility drug used to treat anovulation
Clomid or Clomiphene Cirate
Functional ectopic endometrial tissue located outside the uterus
Endometriosis
A permanent form of birth control that uses small coils placed into the proximal isthmic segment of the Fallopian tube
Essure Device
A perihepatic infection that results in liver capsule inflammation from pelvic infections such as gonorrhea and chlamydia
Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome
Technique used for in vitro fertilization in which follicles are drained for oocyte retrieval
Follicular Aspiration
Infertility treatment in which oocytes and sperm are placed in the Fallopian tube by means of laparoscopy
Gamete Intrafallopian Tube Transfer
Coexisting ectopic and intrauterine pregnancies
Heterotopic Pregnancy
Excessive serum androgen levels; produces male characteristics in females
Hyperandrogenism
Fertility treatment that requires that a mature ovum be extracted from the ovary, with fertilization taking place outside of the body
In Vitro Fertilization
A leiomyoma located within the uterine cavity
Intracavitary Fibroid
A common form of birth control in which a small device is placed within the endometrium to prevent pregnancy; also referred to as an intrauterine contraceptive device
Intrauterine Device
When the endometrium does not develop appropriately in the luteal phase of the endometrial cycle as a result of reduced progesterone production
Luteal Phase Deficiency
Scant or decreased urine output
Oliguria
The removal of oocytes from ovarian follicles of aspiration
Oocyte Retrieval
A syndrome resulting from hyperstimulation of the ovaries by fertility drugs; results in the development of multiple, enlarged follicular ovarian cysts
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
The stimulation of the ovaries by hormonal therapy in oder to treat infertility
Ovulation Induction
Infection of the female genital tract that may involve the ovaries, uterus, and/or the fallopian tubes
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Infertility medicine used to stimulate the follicular development of the ovaries
Pergonal
Syndrome characterized by anovulatory cycles, infertility, hirsutism, amenorrhea, and obesity; may also be referred to as Stein-Leventhal syndrome
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Synthetic progesterone secreted by some intrauterine devices to regulate menstrual flow
Progestin
The presence of pus within the uterus
Pyometra
Artifact seen posterior to air or gas bubbles
Ring-Down Artifact
A method of reducing the number of pregnancies in multiple gestation, whereby certain embryos/fetuses are terminated
Selective Reduction
Congenital malformation of the uterus that results in a single septum that separates to endometrial cavities
Septate Uterus
Sonographic finding that is described as the presence of 10 or more small cysts measuring up to 2-18mm along the periphery of the ovary
“String of Pearls” Sign
A leiomyoma that distorts the shape of the endometrium
Submucosal Fibroid
The formation of a clot within a blood vessel with the potential to travel to a distant site an cause an occlusion
Thromboembolism
A permanent form of female sterilization in which the fallopian tubes are severed
Tubal Ligation
A pelvic abscess involving the Fallopian tubes and ovaries that is often caused by pelvic inflammatory disease
Tube-Ovarian Abscess
When adhesions develop within the pelvis that leads to the fusion of the ovaries and the dilated tubes as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease
Tubo-Ovarian Complex
The uterus, ovaries and the Fallopian tubes
Upper Genital Tract
Inflammation of the vagina
Vaginits
Infertility treatment where the zygote is placed in the fallopian tube
Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer
