Pelvic Cavity/Urinary Flashcards
What is unique about the right kidney compared to the left?
it is more cranial and makes contact with the liver
How is the adrenal gland situated with the surrounding arteries and veins?
-phrenicoabdominal trunk and cranial abdominal a. are dorsal
-accompanying v. is ventral
Where are the loops of Henle and collecting ducts located?
medulla of kidney
Where are the glomeruli located?
cortex of kidney
What is the renal pelvis?
flared end of the ureter
What is the renal sinus?
opening within the hilus where the renal pelvis sits
What is the hilus?
indent in the kidney where the ureter, renal a., and renal v. enter/exit
How do the gonadal veins differ on the left and right sides?
-on left, dump into left renal v.
-on right, dump into caudal vena cava
What is the renal crest?
outpouching of the medulla into the renal pelvis
Why is the renal crest important?
allows for longer renal tubules and thus more water conservation
What are the renal pyramids?
triangular pieces of kidney separated by the arterial system
Where does the ureter enter the rest of the urinary system?
neck of the bladder
Why is it important that the ureter enters on an angle?
the angle allows for closure of the ureter when the bladder fills and produces pressure; protects kidney from pressure affects
What is the pararectal fossa?
pouch that surrounds the rectum
What is the vesicogenital pouch?
pouch between the uterus and the urinary bladder
