Lecture 10 9/21/23 Flashcards
What is the linea alba?
aponeurosis that runs down the midline
What are the abdominal muscles, from external to internal?
-rectus abdominis (same level)
-external abdominal obliques (same level)
-internal abdominal obliques
-transversus abdominis
What is the vascular lacuna?
gap at the pelvis where the abdominal muscle aponeuroses stop; allows for things to exit abdominal cavity
What is the superficial inguinal ring?
opening in the external abdominal oblique aponeurosis that allows for reproductive structures to exit abdominal cavity
What is the cremaster muscle?
-extension of internal abdominal obliques
-passes through superficial inguinal ring
What is the rectus sheath?
structure formed from transversus abdominis and external abdominal oblique aponeuroses that encapsulates rectus abdominis muscle
What happens to the internal abdominal oblique aponeurosis?
it branches off and joins with the abdominis and external abdominal oblique aponeuroses
Where does the rectus abdominis run?
from the back of the sternum to the pubis
What are the abdominal muscle functions?
-support weight of abdominal viscera
-forced expiration
-defecation
-vomiting
-birth
-urination
What is the vaginal process?
outpouching of peritoneum that comes through the superficial inguinal ring
What is the gubernaculum?
-tissue connecting to the gonads that goes through the inguinal rings
-shrinks in males to pull the testes into the scrotum
Where is the deep inguinal ring?
between the internal abdominal obliques and abdominal wall
Where is the inguinal canal?
between the superficial and deep inguinal rings
What are the two potential cryptorchid types?
-intra-abdominal: testicle in abdomen
-intra-inguinal: testicle in inguinal canal
When does a cryptorchid occur?
-when the gonad fails to end up in the scrotum
-gubernaculum may fail to fully shrink
-inguinal rings may not close off enough to keep testes in scrotum
