What is special about the hyoid bone?
Only bone that is not DIRECTLY articulating with another bone
Where is the hyoid located?
Roughly anterior to C4-C5 junction
What is the hyoid an attachment site for?
Tongue musculature

2 pairs of cornua = lesser and greater (which may fuse or be broken)
Describe origin and insertion of digastricus
Origins: mastoid notch of temporal bone and digastric fossa of manidble
Insertion: both loop and insert onto anterior inferior body of the hyoid
Describe the movement of digastricus
Jaw movement
Describe the origin and insertion of stylohyoid
Origin: styloid process of temporal bone
Insertion: anterior inferior body of hyoid
Decribe the movement of stylohyoid
Tongue elevation
Describe the origin and insertion of mylohyoid
Origin: mylohyoid line of mandible
Insertion: anteiror inferior body of hyoid
Describe the movements of mylohyoid
Raises floor of mouth and tongue
