what is a DVT
clot in a vein (usually legs)
what is a PE
clot has dislodged and is in one the the pulmonary artery
what are the competents of virchaw’s triad that can lead to DVT
damage to epithelium, highly coagulable blood, stasis
are distal or proximal veins more likely to form clots
proximal
what are the symptoms of a PE
sudden SOB, sharp chest pain, tachypnoea, fever, haemoptysis. swollen legs
what is the gold standard for PE (and some others)
CT pulmonary angiography, (ABG - resp alk, D-dimer), PESI
what does d-dimer show
if D-Dimer is not raised is NOT a PE. if raised could be but could also be somethig else
what is the treatment for PE
anticoag eg LW warafin + heparin, IV Vit C
what is the treatment for a massive PE
thrombolysis
what can increase risks of DVT
age, long flights, obesity, oral pill
whats the investigations for a DVT
USS and CT
