Cor Pulmonale, stridor, sleep apnoea and ARDS Flashcards
what is the pressure of pulmonary hypertension
more than 25 mmHg
what is cor pulmonale
right heart disease secondary to lung disease, occurs largely in COPD patients where hypoxia –> vasoconstriction which increases pressure back to heart
what are the symptoms of cor pulmonale
progressive breathlessness, oedema, raised JVP, hypertension
what is stridor
inspiratory wheeze normally due to obstruction
what is obstructive sleep apnoea
intermittent upper airway collapse in sleep, can cause hypopneas which is cessation of breathing for 10 seconds
what are the symptoms of sleep apnoea
snoring, lots of daytime drowsiness, restless sleep, headache
what are risk factors for obstructive sleep apnoea
obesity, COPD, narrow opening, muscle tone
what investigations can be done for OSA
epworth sleepiness scale, oximetry, >10 sleep apnoeas per hour
what treatment can be done for OSA
remove underlying cause, dont be fat, CPAP, mandibular advancement device
what is ARDS
acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by fluid in the lungs, inflammation/ infection causes fluid to leak indo lungs
why is fluid in the lungs dangerous
can lead to impaired alveolar gas exchange
