Pathways Flashcards
Gustatory Pathway for taste
transmitted ipsilaterally
Olfactory Pathway for smell
ONLY sensory system that has NO obligatory synaptic relay in thalamus à directly innervates basal forebrain
Auditory Pathway for sound
ipsi/contralaterally to medial superior olivary nucleus
Visual Pathways for sight
Optic tracts travel ipsilaterally to lateral geniculate nuclei in the thalamus
nasal fibers decussate
tempora fibers do not
Geniculostriate pathway relays in the lateral geniculate nucleus and continues to the primary visual
cortex
o At the LGN there are two layers of cells
§ Magnocellular layer: receives input from the ganglion M cells
§ Parvocellular layer: receives input from the ganglion P cells
Extrageniculate pathways bypass the LGN and go to the superior colliculus
