Pathophysiology: Ch. 10 Stress and Disease Flashcards
Alarm Reaction
The first stage of the general adaption syndrome, which is the body’s immediate to the stressor
Catecholamines
Chemical compounds derived from the amino acid tyrosine, which acts a hormone or neurotransmitter
Exhaustion Stage
The third and final stage of the general adaption syndrome in which the body’s resistenace
General Adaption Syndrome
a description of the body’s short-term and long term reactions to stress
Hassles Scale
Developed by Richard Lazarus, a scale of events or daily interruptions with the environment that are essentially negative
Health
a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being. Health is vital principles that enables us to meet and overcome the challenges of the day
Hypothalamic-Pituitary-adrenal axis HPA
a major part of the neuroendocrine system that controls reactions to stress. It is the mechanism for a set of interactions among glands, hormones, and parts of the mid brain that mediate the general adaption syndrome
Life-Change Units (LCUs)
First described in the life chart theory by Adolph Meyer, LCUs are used to provide a weighted scale based on stress - producing events in a person’s life
Resistance Stage
The second stage of the general adaption syndrome, which is the body’s attempt to adapt to stressors it is exposed to.
