What is hip dysplasia (髖關節發育不良)?
Hip dysplasia is an abnormal development and growth of the hip joint, e.g. a shallow socket and an abnormal shaped ball. It can happen on one or both hips.
What is a common disease that may occur if hip dysplasia is undetected or untreated?
Arthritis
What are the causes of hip dysplasia?
Genetic/environmental factors, e.g. obesity. Usually on dogs with heavy weight, but it can also happen in lightweight dogs.
What are the 8 symptoms of hip dysplasia?

- stiff
- pain with full extension and flexion
- slow/unwilling to stand up
- inactive
- change stride in hind legs
- bunny hopping
- lame/limp
- crepitation
Sometimes the only observation is a “laid back” or “calm” puppy. The signs may not fully manifest until the dog is older.
How to prevent hip dysplasia?
- orthopedic examinations for larger breed dogs at 6-month-old
- do not breed dogs with hip dysplasia
- diet
- exercise
Can we massage a dog with hip dysplasia?
Massage can be both indicated and contraindicated, depending on the individual dog’s specific condition. Talk with the vet.
