-5-25% premalignant
Erythroplakia
- 50% premalignant
- Carcinoma in situ
- Thickened mucosal hyperplasia
Most common oral cancer
- 95% Squamous cell carcinoma
- Frequent field effect
SQC pathogenesis (2 pathways)
- Alcohol, Betelnut, Tobacco (mutated p53, NOTCH 1)
2. HPV-16 (tonsillar crypts, base of tongue)
Xerostomia
- Dry mouth
- Associated with anticholinergics, radiation, analgesics, antihitamines
- Atrophy of taste papillae
- Sjogrens syndrome
Sialadenitis
- Inflammation of salivary gland
- Viral - Mumps (paramyxovirus)
- Bacterial - Staph
Sialolithiasis
- Salivary duct obstruction
- Predisposes to bacterial infection
Mucocele
- Cyst filled with mucin & inflammatory cells
- Lined by granulation, not epithelium
Pleomorphic Adenoma
- Benign salivary stromal tumor
- High rate of recurrence if incompletely excised
Warthin tumor
- Benign cystic parotid tumor
- Lymph node-like stroma
- Distinct histology
Adenoid cystic tumor
- Submandibular gland
- Perineural spread makes resection challenging
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma
- Malignant mucinous/squamous salivary tumor
- Frequently involves facial nerve (parotid)
Dentigerous cyst
-Cyst around crown of unerupted tooth
Odontogenic keratocyst
- Aggressive posterior mandible tumor
- Gorlins syndrome -> multiple lesions
Gorlins syndrome
- Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome
- Odontogenic keratocysts
Periapical cyst
Inflammatory cyst following pulp infection
Ameloblastoma
From odontogenic epithelium
Odontoma
Shows deposition of enamel and dentin
