Parts of brain ch 2 Flashcards
Prosencephalon (forebrain)
responsible for olfaction; largest region of the mammalian brain; contains→ neocortex (cerebral cortex), basal ganglia, limbic system; each three areas serve multiple functions
Mesencephalon (midbrain)
vision and hearing; extension of the spinal cord; sensory functions; Contains: tectum (inferior and superior colliculus) and the tegmentum
Rhombencephalon (hindbrain)
movement, breathing, balance; contains spinal cord; extension of the spinal cord; contains cerebellum
Telencephalon (endbrain)
cortex and subcortical structures
Diencephalon (between brain)
thalamus and hypothalamus; integrative tasks; integrates sensory and motor information on its way to the cerebral cortex.
Metencephalon (across brain)
includes enlarged cerebellum
Myelencephalon (spinal brain)
medulla and spinal cord
