Parasite 5 Flashcards
what are included in parasites?
single celled protozoa
multicellular worms
ectoparasites
what is the innate immune response like to protozoan parasites?
similar to bacteria both intracellularly and extracellularly
what is the innate immune response like to metazoan parasites?
IgE bind to parasites, to big to be phagocytosed so eosinophils degranulate on surface of worms like ADCC
what is adaptive immunity like toward protozoan parasites?
what what type of response toward intracellular protozoa?
intracellularly- similar to intracellular bacteria and fungi, CTLs and CD4+ T helper cells play
Th1 response
extracellularly - Th1/Th17 response like other extracellular pathogens
antibodies against parasites similar to extra/intracellular bacteria/fungi
prevents binding of pathogens
neutralization
ADCC
what is adaptive immunity like towards metazoan parasites?
also multicellular, these are extracellular so mainly a Th2 (IL5) response and humoral response resulting IgE antibodies and eosinophil activation
what is the effect of Th2 response towards metazoan parasites or helminths?
eosinophil activation
helminth death
how does the immune system respond to helminth invasion?
antibody production leading to mast cell degranulation
intestinal mucus secretion and peristalsis
eosinophil activation
macrophage activation
