Panopto 37:Endocrine Flashcards
what is the function of the endocrine system
produce various secretions called hormones that regulate the activities of various cells, tissues, and organs of the body
communication network
endocrine system + nervous system
communication in nervous system
action potentials carried by neurons causes an immediate response but it also goes away quickly
communication in endocrine
secreting hormones, but the delivery of those hormones is variable.
What is endocrine control?
endocrine control (traditional or classic): delivered by circulatory system to distant locations where they bind to target cells. the response to the hormone is delayed, and the response is prolonged; it doesn’t disappear quickly.
what portion of endocrine system doesnt function by circulatory system transport?
paracrine control: secrete tissues in connective tissue spaces around the cells
autocrine: cells express receptors on their own surfaces. hormones regulate the same cells that secreted them
diffuse neuroendocrine system (DNES)
not a production of hormones
multiple function organs
when they dont only produce hormones, the production of hormones are secondary
ex: lung and the gut tetis and the ovaries production of gametes (primary function) and steroid hormones (secondary function)
discrete endocrine glands
only secrete hormones via circulatory system
ex: hypophysis- pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pineal
