exam 4 hormones Flashcards
antimullerian hormone
produced by sertoli cells, stops formation of mullerian duct in males (male reproductive)
Testosterone (T)
produced by leydig cells from cholesterol, stimulates mesonephric duct, present from conception to 4.5 month fetus, then not until puberty (male repro)
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
produced by leydig cells from cholesterol, works with T to aid formation of external genetalia present from conception to 4.5-month fetus, then not until puberty
Estradiol
produced by leydig cells from cholesterol, works with T to program brain (hypothalamus) for gonad function present from conception to 4.5-month fetus, then not until puberty
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)/vasopressin
made by the hypothalamus supraoptic nerve, causes the kidney to conserve more water for blood and vasoconstriction. increased sodium leads to ADH released, which causes an increase in water intake and therefore sodium decreases
Oxytocin
made by the hypothalamus, periventricular nucleus, stimulates lacatation in mammary glands, stimulated by suckling
Releasing factor
made by hypothalamus stimulates the release of trophic hormones (secreted by the adenohypophysis) in the pars distalis stimulated by low concentrations of target cell products/hormones
Inhibiting factor
made by the hypothalamus stimulates the release of trophic hormones (secreted by the adenohypophysis) in the pars distalis stimulated by high concentrations of target cell products/hormones
Prolactin
trophic hormone made in lactotrophic cells (acidophilic) in the pars distalis, mammary gland development and lactation in females and T production in males
Low testosterone leads to increased releasing factor, which leads to an increase in prolactin and therefore an increase in testosterone
growth factor
trophic hormone made in somatrophic cells (adidophilic) in the pars distalis stimulates growth in long bones
Lutenising Hormone (LH)
trophic hormone made in gonadotrophic cells (basophilic) in the pars distalis stimulates ovulation in females and testosterone production in males
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
trophic hormone made in gonadotrophic cells (basophilic) in the pars distalis stimulates ovulation in females and germ cell division in males
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
trophic hormone made in the thyrotrophic cells (basophilic) in the pars distalis, stimulates T3 and T4 production in the thyroid
Andrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
trophic hormone made in the adrenocorticotrophic cells (basophilic) in the pars distalis. stimulates synthesis of glucocorticords in adrenal gland zona fasiculata, affecting glucose metabolism
Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH)
hormone made in the pars intermedia. questionable function
