What is acute pain
Usually sharp, localized, less than 6 months
Initiates flight or fight stress response
What is somatic pain
Arises from skin, close to surface of body, sharp or dull, often with n/v
What is visceral pain
Arises from body organs
Dull and poorly localized
With n/v
May radiate or is referred
What is referred pain
Pain perceived in an area distant from stimuli
What is chronic pain
More than 6 months
Often dull, aching, diffuse
Not always assoc with a specific cause often unresponsive to conventional tx.
What is the most common chronic pain
Lower back pain
What is neuralgias
A common chronic pain condition
It is pain from peripheral nerve damage
What are dystrophies
A common chronic pain condition characterized by pain from peripheral nerve damage characterized by continuous burning pain
What is hyperesthesia
State of over sensitivity to touch and painful stimuli
What is phantom pain
Post amputation
The person experiences sensations and pain in the missing body part
What is psychogenic pain
Pain without a physiological cause or event
What is pain tolerance
Amount of pain a person can endure before outwardly responding to it
What is TENS
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation
The nerve conducts electrical current and so cannot conduct pain
