PA and the Lungs (lecture 13) Flashcards

1
Q

Describe some of the adaptations that occur to the CV system as a result of exercise training?

A

Increased oxygen uptake, increased plasma volume and blood vessel function.

VO2 Max, blood volume and metabolic control all increase whereas bp decreases

Q

What does exercise do the risk of hypertension?

A

Decreased risk by 50%, typically a 7mmHg decrease in blood pressure occurs, just 2mmHg is significant (CHD decrease 7%,stroke 10%)

Q

What is Asthma and some of the triggers?

A

Asthma is a condition that causes coughing, wheezing tight chest and breathlessness.
Causes inflammation of the bronchi which makes them more sensitive than normal
Triggers include dry, cold air, animal fur pollen, EIB (can occur during or right after exercise)

Q

Describes the patient inactivity cycle in COPD?

A

Cycle occurs where patients feel breathless, therefore do less activity, muscles weaken, then muscles use more O2 and the cycle continues

Q

Exercise benefits of COPD?

A

Increased O2 capacity, decreased minute ventilation, FEV2 decline reduced, cardiac function improved

Decreased anxiety about breathlessness, lower bp, reduced social isolation, positive effects on co-morbidities
