Imapct of Sedentarism On Behaviour (lecture 4) Flashcards
Define physical inactivity
A behavioural pattern that reduces physical activity time.
The absence of moderate (3METS) to vigorous (8METS) activity
Less than 7500-10000 steps a day
Define sedentarism
A behavioural pattern that reduces physical activity time.
Typically defined as sitting/lying behaviour (less than 1.5METS) in a waking state
How many UK and US don’t get enough exercise?
80% and 90% respectively
What did the work of Levine (2005) and Levine (2006) find?
Obese stand less and sit more (2.7,2H).
NEAT was higher for lean subjects and obese walk far less (3.5miles/day)
What did Van see Ploeg (2012) find?
In order to decrease mortality, an individual must increase PA and decrease physical inactivity
What did RISC study show?
That an increase in sedentary time reduced insulin sensitivity
What have studies shown about the importance of moderate-vigorous PA?
Studies have shown that 20 days of bed rest decrease VO2 Max by 20%.
Also going from 10,000 to 1,500 steps/day decreased it by 7%
