PA and Brain Health (lecture 12) Flashcards
Name some effects of the brain that occur with age?
Grey and white matter blood flow decrease by 0.5% each year and cerebral atrophy occurs which alters neural signaling and cognitive impairments
How is dementia caused?
Caused by conditions that affect the brain, for example Alhzeimers, a stroke or a head injury
What are some risk factors for Alhzeimers disease?
Highest risk factor is PA followed by depression, obesity also relevant. T2D least relevant risk factor
What are the associations between dementia and exercise?
Exercise said to help prevent dementia (studies have shown a reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia from exercise)
Exercise also said to help vascular dementia, which has positive effects on hypertension T2D
Mental illness and metabolic syndrome?
Strong correlation between the two
Explain the relationship between PA and depression
PA said to help reduce both depressive symptoms and major depression, there is considered to be a bi-directional relationship between PA and depressive symptoms
What are the exercise recommendations for those with depression?
The same as normal guidelines, but should consider augmenting CBT with the PA
The benefits of exercise for those with poor mental health?
- improved cardio metabolic health
- decreased symptoms
- improved self-esteem and sleep
- PA offered as adjunct treatment may facilatiate engagement
How is a stroke caused?
Too much or too little brain blood flow
Acute - faint stroke
Chronic - hypertension, diabetes,dementia
Explain the relationship between brain blood flow and ageing
Ageing is poor for brain blood flow but exercise is a key, it can offset ageing process by 10 years
What did a study show when looking at BBF and response time?
Studies show that increased blood flow leads to improved response time (R2 = 0.5)
