P1- Incarnation exam questions Flashcards
Explain two contrasting ways in which Jesus described himself (4 marks)
1) ‘Son of Man’ teaches Jesus is God made man= Reflects Jesus’ human nature and teaches Christians Jesus was fully human, taking on the full human condition
2) Jesus is referred to as the ‘Son of God’ stressing Jesus’ divinity= Teaches Christians that Jesus was God and therefore he could forgive sin and perform miracles
Explain two contrasting Christian views about statues of Jesus (4 marks)
1) Some Christians believe Jesus shouldn’t be portrayed in statues, because of the 2nd Commandment= Person might be worshipping the statue, instead of Jesus, which is why artwork is forbidden in worship
2) Catholics believe statues can help Christians to understand the nature and qualities of Jesus= For example, the Sacred Heart statue is a reminder Jesus’ sacrifice was a sign of his burning love for humanity
Explain two ways in which believing in the Incarnation of Jesus influences Catholics today. (4 marks)
1) God took on human condition as Jesus= Influences Catholic belief in sacramental nature of reality as through Incarnation, the whole of creation is made holy as God’s presence has physically touched earth as Jesus
2)Christians believe God is fully revealed through Jesus’ Incarnation and therefore Jesus was the perfect example of humanity= Influences Christians to develop their prayer life and receive the Sacraments to ensure they are living according to God’s will as Jesus did
Explain two ways in which Jesus’ Parable of the Sheep and the Goats influences the way Christians respond to people in need. (4 marks)
1) Teaches Christians to put their faith into action by helping those less fortunate than ourselves= parable reminds Christians to do practical things to improve lives of others to ultimately bring justice to our world
2)Teaches that when we show love to those in need, we show love to God= Teaches Christians that judgement will be based on how they treat others and respond to those in need (go to Heaven)
Explain two ways in which the Sacrament of Confirmation influences Catholics today. (4 marks)
1) It renews or strengths a person’s faith= This is because it is when a person commits to the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism
2) It renews the Holy Spirit in the lives on individuals= Confirmation encourages active participation in the life of the Church through mission and evangelism
Explain two ways in which beliefs about the incarnation have influenced Catholic views about religious art. (4 marks)
1) Christians believe in the incarnation (God became human as Jesus)= Influences Catholic attitudes towards artwork as God took on the full limitations of humanity in Jesus so we can show him in this limited form e.g. artwork.
2) Christians believe God came to earth as Jesus to save all humanity from sin= Influences Catholic attitudes towards artwork as Jesus can be shown as any ethnicity as artwork helps people from all around the world relate better to him
Explain two Catholic teachings about the Incarnation. Refer to scripture or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer. (5 marks)
1) One document about the incarnation is Dei Verbum, teaching Jesus becoming a man was the only way for humans to truly understand God= “He might dwell among men and tell them of the innermost being of God” which shows that God is revealed and speaks through Jesus
2) Another document about the incarnation is Verbum Domini teaching Jesus’ incarnation made God visible to us on earth= “the eternal word became small – small enough to fit into a manger” showing Son of God limited himself to human form, so humans could come to understand God
Explain two teachings of Irenaeus about the incarnation of Jesus. Refer to scripture or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer. (5 marks)
1) Jesus reveals what God is like= “He revealed God to men and presented men to God.”= This means the qualities we see in Jesus are qualities of God the Father. God became human so that we could relate to God and learn about him.
2) Through Jesus, human beings experience God’s grace= God’s grace is made available to humanity through the incarnation because Jesus brought God’s love into the world
Explain two ways in which religious art expresses beliefs about Jesus. Refer to scripture or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer. (5 marks)
1) Artwork reminds Christians that God became human to save humanity from sin= Bible states “Jesus gave his life as a ransom for many”. This is important because the crucifix is a reminder that because of Jesus’ humanity, he suffered out of love and to bring forgiveness.
2) Reminds Christians that Jesus granted people access to eternal life= E.g Sacred Heart statues show Jesus after resurrection as reminder he conquered the power of sin and death
Explain two teachings of Jesus from the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats about how Christians should respond to people in need. Refer to scripture or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer. (5 marks)
1) Christians must put their faith into action by helping those less fortunate= Parable Jesus says “I was hungry and you gave me food”= Reminds Christians to do practical things to improve lives of others to ultimately bring justice to our world
2) When we show love to those in need, we show love to God.= Teaches Christians that judgement will be based on how to treat others and respond to those in need (go to Heaven).
‘Christians should not show Jesus in art – for example, in statues or paintings.’ (12 marks)
1) FOR- Some Christians believe religious art breaks 2nd commandment ”You shall not make for yourself an idol” Bible
AGAINST- Images used as an inspiration to worship God/ stimulus for prayer to God- “Whoever venerates an image, venerates the person portrayed in it.” Catechism
2) FOR- Images can portray wrong ideas about God/ misleading e.g. statues of Jesus as human don’t always portray his divinity
AGAINST- Because of incarnation, it’s possible to show God in art, God took on human limitations in Jesus so we can show him in this limited form.
CONCLUSION-AGAINST
‘The best way of living a Christian life is to follow the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1–12).’ (12 marks)
1) FOR- Beatitudes describe a change of attitude necessary to live a Christian life
AGAINST- Receiving the sacraments is a better way (filled with God’s grace
2) FOR- Jesus gave a deeper understanding of how to love God, not just following the commandments, but a change of attitude “Blessed are the…”
AGAINST- Attending mass is a better way to live a Christian life as you receive communion
CONCLUSION-AGAINST
‘For Christians, taking the life of an unborn child (abortion) is always wrong.’ (12 marks)
1) FOR- God created humans in his image (imago dei) [quote] / all human life should be protected
AGAINST- Severely disabled baby won’t have a good ‘quality of life‘, cruel to bring such a baby into the world
2) FOR- Fetus is a child from the moment of conception e.g Mary’s visit to Elizabeth quote- considered murder
AGAINST- The decision should be the mother’s as it is her body / only she will know if she can cope
CONCLUSION- FOR
‘For Catholics, the sacraments are the best way to know God’s love.’ (12 marks)
1) FOR- Sacrament is a sign of God’s grace (God’s free gift of love to all people) ‘an outward sign of inward grace’
AGAINST- God’s love is received in many other ways in the life of a Catholic- praying etc
2) FOR- Catholics believe every time they take part in a sacrament they welcome Christ into their lives
AGAINST- Know God’s love through actions of Jesus e.g. the Parable of the Sheep and Goats “The Word became flesh and lived among us.” Bible
‘The best title for Jesus is ‘Son of Man’.’ (12 Marks)
1) FOR- Jesus used to refer to himself especially in reference to his suffering and death “The Son of Man must undergo great suffering … and be killed.” Bible
AGAINST- Emphasises his divinity which if we do not focus on, we lose important aspects of Christianity e.g. Jesus is the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity
2) FOR- It reminds Christians of the extent of Jesus’ love for humanity
AGAINST- Remembering he the Son of God gives credibility to his teachings. Jesus is better able to teach people about God because he is God so we trust his teachings “For He sent his Son so that He might dwell among men and tell them of the innermost being of God.” Dei Verbum
