1) FOR= Humans sin but God is perfect
AGAINST= ‘Made in God’s image’ doesn’t mean humans are equal to God but humans are holy
2) FOR= Humans are not omnipotent or transcendent like God
AGAINST= God breathed life into humans so humans share God’s spirit and share some of God’s qualities
CONCLUSION- AGAINST
‘Every Christian should support environmental sustainability projects.’ (12 Mark)
1) FOR= Christians have a duty to care for God’s creation (stewardship) so humans should not abuse the environment “Till it and keep it” Bible
AGAINST= Governments need to take sustainability seriously not individual Christians / the problem is too big for individuals
2)FOR= Exploiting nature will ruin the lives of future generations – “Love your neighbour as yourself” Bible
AGAINST= Christians may have no influence over developing countries’ policies
CONCLUSION-FOR
‘The best way to “love your neighbour” is to care for the environment.’ Evaluate this statement. (12 Marks)
1) FOR= Disregard for environment means not loving future generations, we should support sustainability
AGAINST= Limit to what individuals can do to help, should be dealt with by governments globally
2)FOR= Important way of loving one’s neighbour because environment is where one’s neighbour lives and everyone’s actions affect every other person
AGAINST= More important to love the neighbour in need at a local level e.g. the poor / homeless
‘The creation accounts in Genesis contradict scientific views of how the world began.’ (12 Marks)
1) FOR= Fundamentalists accept creation stories to be literally true, the Bible is the word of God and completely accurate
AGAINST= Catholics believe not everything in the Bible should be interpreted literally as it was written by humans inspired by God
2) FOR= Literal interpretation of the Bible means it is not possible to believe in the Big Bang as the Bible states God created the world in ‘six days’
AGAINST= Catholic Church accepts creation stories alongside Big Bang and theory of evolution, believing God to be the cause. Genesis creation stories are read as myths so don’t contradict evolution “The Big Bang … does not contradict the divine act of creating, but rather requires it” Pope Francis
‘Michelangelo’s painting of the ‘Creation of Adam’ perfectly expresses a Catholic understanding of humanity.’ (12 Mark)
1) FOR= Shows humans are made in God’s image as God and Adam lie in similar positions “God created humankind in his image.”- Genesis 1
AGAINST= Bible= God brought Adam to life by breathing into his nostrils. Painting= God brings Adam to life through touch. – God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis 2)
2)FOR= Shows humans receive life from God/ totally dependent on God as God is reaching out giving life to Adam
AGAINST= Catholic Church doesn’t teach that creation of humans (as shown in Genesis) is factual, painting doesn’t reflect Catholic teaching about the role of evolution in God’s creation
‘Christians should accept everything in the Bible as the word of God.’ (12 Mark)
1) FOR=God speaks to his people through the Bible so it is God’s word
AGAINST= Bible had many writers, Christians believe they were inspired by the Spirit of God so not every word is literally true ‘All scripture is God-breathed’ (Bible)
2)FOR= Gospels contain teachings and actions of Jesus who is God made human ‘The Word of God became flesh and lived among us’ (Bible)
AGAINST= Written over 1000 years so while writers were inspired, they were also products of their times ‘The Bible is not meant to convey precise historical information or scientific findings to us.’ (Youcat)
CONCLUSION= AGAINST (differs from denomination)
