Oxygen Flashcards
SaO2
Saturation of arterial blood
SpO2
Saturation measured using a pulse oximeter
PaO2
The amount of oxygen dissolved in arterial blood plasma
What will happen to the amount of oxygen bound to haemoglobin if the partial pressure of oxygen increases?
Increase - but not proportionally
FiO2
The fraction of inspired oxygen
Why do patients retain CO2?
- V/Q mismatch
- The haldane effect
Causes of hypoxic hypoxaemia
Low inspired O2 conc.
Alveolar hypoventilation
Impaired diffusion
Shunting
Good perfusion, bad ventilation
Dead space
Good ventilation, bad perfusion
When does shunting occur?
COPD, pulmonary oedema, sarcoidosis, lung cancer etc.
When does dead space occur?
Pulmonary embolism, pulmonary vasculitis, pulmonary hypertension
Nasal canula
Well tolerated, low flow - uncontrolled FiO2
Hudson face mask
Cheap and simple, but can’t cope with high flow
Venturi mask
Fixed performance - good for type 2 res. failure
Resivoir mask
Non-rebreather, used in emergencies
