oxidation of glucose Flashcards
What are the 2 step which carry out the oxidation of glucose? Where does it occur and what are the end products?
- The first is glycolysis which occurs in the cytoplams of the cell and is anaerobic. End product is pyruvic acid
- Second step occurs in mitochondrion. The Kreb’s cycle (Citric Acid ) takes Pyruvic Acid and completes its
oxidation to CO2 .
Where does the Kreb’s cycle occur in the mitochondria?
The matrix
What is the intermediate of the oxidation of glucose?
NADH
The reduction of oxygen to water uses the intermediate generated from
Glycolysis and the Kreb’s Cycle, NADH. This will produce
ATP
Where does the reduction of oxygen occur in the mitochondria?
The cristae
How is ATP generated?
By the creation of a H+ gradient between cristae or inner mitochondrial membrane (cristae) and the outer mitochondrial
membrane.
The TCA cycle (which is also known as the Krebs, or citric acid, cycle) plays a central
role in the
breakdown, or catabolism, of
organic fuel molecules.
The TCA cycle is made up of numerous steps
catalyzed by different enzymes that produce
energy at several different stages
